“I started [surfing] on my own when I was about 5 or 6, by the time I was eight I had my first custom board. I was probably more comfortable playing football or baseball at the time, but then gradually I got to where surfing overtook everything.”

During his time in New York last week to promote September’s Quiksilver Pro New York, ten-time world Champion Kelly Slater gave a fascinating interview covering his childhood, the origins of his competitive drive and how his mindset to the sport has changed over the years.
