mesurf Review:
I've always wanted a snap shot of the year in surfing to replace the 30 odd mags that build up every year. The Surfing Yearbook is one of those timeless pieces that you'll pull out, dust off and show your grand kids how the surfing world looked, reacted and who it was dominated by back in '08. Everyone loves a bit of surfing history! Covering all the key elements of the surfing world over the past 12 months, and edited by one of the best surf journos Phil Jarratt, the book will be sitting in my living room on display for years to come.

CONTENT
4.25/5
The book is 240 pages, filled with results, reports, events, films, regional summaries and stories that were top of the surfing world in 2008. With the backing of Surfersvillage (worlds largest network of surf news) the book has almost everything you could possibly want to know about the year of 2008. It's content is easy to read and understand which is no easy feat when combining so many different editorial types. There is a bit of advertising within the book, but I think this is great. I love looking at ads that ran 10 years ago, looking at old school design, the equipment that was promoted.

"
What we’re aiming to do with The Surfing Yearbook is to present a fully-rounded picture of surfing that will appeal to everyone in the sport, culture and industry, from the lowliest grom surfing in his first amateur comp to the high-rolling CEO of the biggest surf corporations. We’re targeting the grom first because we know the CEOs will follow.” - Phil Jarratt

PRODUCTION
4.5/5
With a large format with hard cover, the book looks awesome and would easily slot in as your favourite coffee table book. The quality of production is top-shelf and the 240 pages are glue bound with a high GSM and gloss finish.

DESIGN/LAYOUT

2.5/5
The book looks busy from a design point of view, with images squeezed in and around text heavy articles. It's a hard task I'm sure, as there's a lot of info and shots gathered from a year in surf to fit into one book. However the design element could be a bit better and worth looking at for the 2009 yearbook.

QUALITY
4.25/5
The overall quality of the book is good with a time and effort put into the material and editorial selections. The book looks and feels high quality and one that will last decades.

OVERALL
4/5
There is nothing like this on the market (that I know of) and is an awesome offering. The Surfing Yearbook should/will be on every surfers wish list and is available now for purchase. Want to check it out in the flesh? Drop into your local surf store and ask the dude behind the counter if you can have a look.

  • TIKI PRODIGY 3/2 STEAMER WETSUIT REVIEW [13.Apr.2010] Category: Surf wetsuits

The Tiki Prodigy wettie is recommended for cold water surfers who care more about function than form. This suit is made by the Brits, so it should be warm...and it is. The suit however looks like it's been thrown together with dodgy patch jobs and glue leaks, but it does perform...

NIXON WATCHES | A fresh look at a new (we'll say refurbished) Nixon watch called The Housing. With a very similar display and function to the super popular Nixon Lodown, The Housing has a more modern appeal, with a much thinner display and artistic square layout. More after the jump...
