REVIEW - RIP CURL LIVE THE SEARCH
iPHONE SURFING GAME
If you'd told me five years ago you'll be playing surf games on your phone I would've pictured something like California Games but worse. Over the past 12 months we've seen a rebirth of the surfing game market hit the iPhone scene. I'm still unsure why these games aren't made with larger gaming consoles in mind.
California Games: The standard by which surfing video games were measured in 1989.
While it's hard to go past the above, I recently spent a few hours of downtime over the past few weeks on Rip Curl's "Live The Search: The Ultimate Surfing Game" and have to say, it's pretty sweet. Forget your California games 2D game play, Rip Curl's Live the Search is a 3D surfing game that uses all the iPhone functionality allowing you to pull more tricks than some really tricky guy who's always pulling off heaps of tricks ..and that.
PRO'S: Not too hard to get a feel for the controls. Smooth 3D graphics.
CON'S: Some of the gameplay is a little repetitive over time. Not enough 'on the face' moves
CONCEPT:
You choose your surfer, cloth them (wetties, boardshorts and rashies to choose from), select a board and then hit the waves. You have to complete a set range of objectives at a break to progress to the next. These include things like: Do a kickflip and healflip consecutively, do 20 tricks, do a floater, score 5,000 points. As you progress you'll unlike new boards and new locations.
GAMEPLAY
Gameplay is pretty good, obviously it's limited in that it's on a touch screen device, but Rip Curl have made sure they've used all the various functionality allowed including Tilt Movement, Swipe Controller and Touch buttons.
The iPhone's "Tilt Movement" accelerometer technology, allows the player to control the movement of their surfer by tilting the iPhone left or right. The titling motion moves the surfer up and down the face of the wave allowing you to generate speed to boost and carve like the best of them.
Swipe Controller: Live The Search features a high-tech swipe controller, which holds the key to performing airs and making turns on a wave. You use your finger to make directed swipes on screen to perform cutbacks, aerial flips, grabs and the odd super crazy air.
Stall & Floater Button: On the left of the screen are the stall and floater buttons, which help put you deep inside some of the worlds best caves. If you find yourself in a sticky situation hit the floater button and you'll be sweet.
OVERALL
RIp Curl's Live The Search is a game that's designed to keep you challenged over a long period of time. There's plenty to master and keep you interested and you'll find something new almost every time you play it. Playing it all day everyday ain't gonna do you or anyone around you any favours, but it's one of those iPhone apps that you love to have for those occasions when you need a break. Sure there are a few graphic faults here and there and the odd hick-up, but as a whole Rip Curl have dropped a sweet offering.
