ABOUT

These are Hurley's top line, best of the best, top gun, Bentley, AMG badged, hootin' daddy Limited edition pair of boardies. Hurley (now owned by Nike) have incorporated special Nike flywire technology, along with water repellant, 140% stretch, seamless materials that are designed to make the boardies lighter, stronger and more comfortable than ever before. When you throw down your cash for a pair you not only get the boardies, but you get your own special box, booklet, exclusive DVD and authentication certificate. Valued at $250 a pop I went over these bad boys with a fine tooth comb to see what bang you get for your buck...

STYLE

The Hurley Phantom with Nike Flywire boardies are sleek that look stealth to say the least. Jet black all over with subtle but almost bedazzling logo's and prints that reflect when hit in the right light. I was digging the slightly shorter leg length than that of it's predecessor the Phantom 120's. They have a very well designed and put together back pocket, sounds trivial, but the pocket is panel welded from the insde, so you don't have an outline from the back. The pocket zip is flat with a water resistant coating. Combine that with seamless design throughout and you get a pair of boardies that look like they've been carved from one piece of material.

 

QUALITY

Quality is top-line throughout as it should be for the 250 bones to own. Hurley have removed all sewn seems (except around the fly and waist band) and added in some extra 'Nike Flywire' technology. The seams are perfect with no excess glue, no crooked joins and no excess material. Everything is in it's right place. For the special limited edition pieces, they've made damn sure their QC (quality control) is on the money.

COMFORT

The overall material is slightly different to the other 'Phantom lines' in that it is more flexible, lighter, stronger and more water resistant. The material feels great against the skin and like you're wearing nothing at all. The comfort is everything you've come to expect from the latest tech boardshorts.

FEATURES

Nike Flywire: The 'focus' feature is they've removed all metallic pieces within the boardies.(other than the pocket zip) and used the Nike Flywire material around these high stress areas. This stops the tearing around the chord buttons that has happened on a number of my older boardshorts I own. Other features however include:
Water repellent: pretty amazing I have to say. When testing these boardies out I was blown away with how water repellent they are, after a surf they're dry within a minute. Even in the water they're hardly wet if that can make any sense at all?
140% stretch: The boardshorts have all the stretch you'll ever need in and out of the water and I really liked the seamless technology. Cutting out any rashing during long session, running or sporting activities.
Other: The back pocket is very well designed for both aesthetics and comfort. Personally I prefer a side key pocket, but I barely noticed my key in the back pocket while surfing.

OVERALL

Hurley have pulled out all stops with the new limited edition range. They've pulled every facet out of a standard pair of boardies and re-engineered them to be lighter, stronger, and more comfortable. It would be great to see some special LTD edition badging on them perhaps (like the AMG badge that comes with the up-spec mercs) so that at least someone might recognise that you forked out 250 bucks for a pair. They're top line in all areas, but if you're 'not' a die hard fan of the LTD edition concept - special packaging, unique upgrades, limited runs etc -  then the price tag will be a little hard to swallow. If you do have the coin and want something that not everyone else can have then I can assure you'll be getting a pair of boardshorts that carry the highest tech specs and quality assurance you can find in the boardie market.

I'm giving them a 4.75 out of 5 for what they offer and represent, and 'not' the price.
