I was a bit of daydreamer as a kid, so when I saw a photo that took my interest, I would drift off into the picture and imagine being there. I remember coming across a surfing magazine when I was about 14 and been transfixed by the amazing water shots that were taken at some tropical blue water destination, these images really stirred something inside me. I wanted to be experiencing what these surfers were doing. At that time I lived in Adelaide, so going surfing was difficult task, my family did go to the beach a fair bit, but the waves near Adelaide were almost non existent, it wasn’t until some of my older mates got their licenses, that I started getting driven the necessary hour and half south to get into some swells. When I was old enough to get my own car, I was going down south at every opportunity. At 21, I eventually escaped Adelaide and set off for a one year lap around Australia with my girl, this was when I started getting into my photography, while on the road I finished a photo journalism course, but all the best stuff I have learnt was self taught. Once we run out of money we moved to Moonee beach just north of Coffs and have lived here for the last 11 years.

I am a surf photographer because I love surfing and I love looking at surfing pictures. I am constantly amazed how affected someone can be from a single image. One frozen moment in time can inspire and potentially send someone on totally different path in life. This is why surf photography has become my passion and profession. One day I hope to take an image that will inspire one young person to take the journey of a life devoted to the ocean. If this happens my job is done on this planet.

We have a brand new surf photography website which is updated every weekday morning with images of the Coffs Harbour region. This part of the coastline hasn’t got a big name surf spot like Lennox, Angourie or the superbank. But I think it has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and since starting this daily surf blog, there haven’t been too many days where I haven’t scored a shot of someone getting barrelled. Thing is, those barrels don’t happen in the same spots every day, so you really have to be tuned into wave directions and tides to score around these parts.

I am especially interested in photographing surfers who ride a variety of surfboards. From my experience these guys tend to have way more fun in the ocean, rarely is it ego based, just riding the right boards for the right conditions; this joy normally translates to more emotion and energy in a still photograph.

I still love photographing all the progressive shortboarding in our area too. We have a bunch of guys that have a ton of talent without the level of exposure that they deserve, so ST surf images plans to change that and get these guys on the map.

Our plans for the future are to massively expand our new surf website, help generate a positive surf culture for the riders of the mid north coast and produce beautiful ocean images for the world to see. You can join our subscriber list and see our day-to-day progress and as a bonus you may win yourself a custom shaped board from DMC surfboards.
