SLATER BURNS WHILE BURROW & WILSON IGNITE
Telstra Drug Aware Pro 2011 - Day 5

MARGARET RIVER, Western Australia
(Friday, April 8, 2011) - In a huge upset today at the Telstra Drug Aware Pro at Margaret River, 21-year-old emerging Kiwi surfer Billy Stairmand defeating 10-time world champion Kelly Slater.

Stairmand set the win up mid-heat when he took off on one of the bigger waves of the heat, belted two extremely committed backhand critical top-to-bottom turns and posted an outstanding 9-point ride.

Slater tried to take the heat late with an excellent 8-point ride but was unable to overtake Stairmand, exiting the competition
in the Round of 24.

Local favourite Taj Burrow has already booked his spot in the Quarter Finals, winning through an amazing heat this afternoon with a perfect 10.0 then following it with an 8.0 ride.  Burrow came from behind when even his perfect ride still had him placed second behind Michel Bourez.  But his final wave, a towering left-hander breaking well out into the bay, gave him the perfect platform for a high score and to move straight into the finals tomorrow.

Joining Burrow in the Quarter Finals tomorrow will be a red hot Julian Wilson (AUS), who edged out Joel Parkinson (AUS) in the Round of 24 and then also went on to edge out Mick Fanning (AUS) in a high-scoring clash in the Round of 12.

Event organisers have confirmed The Finals will be held tomorrow to bring a conclusion to an awesome week of surfing action at the 2011 Telstra Drug Aware Pro at Margaret River.

Quarter Finals Match-ups:
1. Granger Larsen (HAW) V Marc Lacomare (France)
2. Damien Hobgood (USA) V Jadson Andre (BRA)
3. Yadin Nicol (AUS) V  Julian Wilson (AUS)
4. Taj Burrow (AUS) V  William Cardosa (BRA)
