TAJ BURROW GOES MAYHEM IN CALIFORNIA
During California’s leg of the tour last September, World No. 3 Taj Burrow spent two days road-testing a range of different surfboard models via shaper Matt Biolos of Lost Surfboards. Burrow, who rides for Firewire, has no plans in switching supplier, in fact, Firewire brokered the sessions with a view to create a potential new Taj Firewire model that would collaborate with Biolos’ ‘Mayhem’ model. Here’s Biolos’ take on the experience plus footage of Burrow putting the boards through their paces. Will this collab be Burrow’s new weapon of choice for 2011?
From Matt Biolos:
This footage of Taj was shot over a couple days last September. Taj was in town for the Lowers event and the guys from Firewire mentioned he would like to try a couple boards with the intention of possibly developing into a FW board for him.
The first boards I made were pure Whiplash, due to the extreme rocker, narrow nose and tail, boards he rides so well of Nev's. All in the 5'10/5'11 18.18 2.18" zone. (These are the boards in the first part ...all the sloppy messy lowers stuff). Then, one of the days at small sloppy Rivey, he jumped on one of Kolohe’s (Andino) boards (A 5'10 18.50 2.18 Scorcher)....Full polar opposite of a Taj board and it seemed to really open his eyes a bit to different designs. So, we decided to make a couple boards with an outline half way between the two, with Kolohe’s rocker and foil style. 5'10.5 18.25 2.18". I started with the Taj, Whiplash rocker and lowered the centerline (leaving the rail rocker the same...creating Vee, and a lot of drive, in the tail. Kept a healthy bit of area in the tail and lower nose rocker as well. This is the blue board in the second half of the vid. In the end, we developed this style of board into the FW (FST) tech, and they finally got him a couple of those to try in mid December in Hawaii. There's a chance it will be released as a FW/Mayhem Colab.

He's an awesome surfer to work with. We had a lot of fun and surfed tiny, uncrowded Lowers together a couple times during the process. Definitely the most on top of it, high caliber, peak performance athlete I have worked with. There's very, very few surfers at this level of skill, professionalism, experience and competitive results (You can count them on one hand and still have a digit or two left over). He’s been at such a high level for so long. It was a great training camp for both him and I that month. Nev, and the guys at Firewire have been great to work with as well.
