KELLY SLATER VS DANE REYNOLDS - 2010 PIPE HYPE

Well folks, the prestigious final stop of the ASP World Tour, the Billabong Pipeline Masters, is only a slender week away. With this in mind, we’re getting our hype on here at mesurf by casting your eyes back 12 months, to last year’s event. It was here Kelly Slater and Dane Reynolds; perhaps the two biggest names in the sport today, each put on memorable displays that delivered significant contributions to their respective highlight reels. Yes, in 09 the Pipeline Masters was very much the Kelly and Dane show. Will it be these guys who light it up again in 2010?

Slater has taken out the Pipeline Masters a record six times (including a 3-peat: 1994-’96), he finished second to Taj Burrow in the event last year, and is one of only a few surfers to have carved out a reputation at what many regard to be the Madison Square Garden of surfing.

Reynolds, at almost 15yrs Slater’s junior, has only competed in the Pipeline Masters twice since his arrival on the ASP World tour in 2008. Despite this, as you'll see below, it's incredible how comfortable he looks surfing the iconic break at the highest level. Reynolds finished third at Pipeline in his sophomore year - not a bad achievement for just his second shot at an event that boosts a past winners list that's more-or-less a who’s who of professional surfing.

While this stat looks pretty impressive on young Reynolds’ scouting report, if we delve into the archives it’s no surprise we learn that Kelly Slater not only won the Pipe Masters in his sophomore year on tour, he also became the youngest person to win the World Title that year too. He was 20-years-old.

Last year’s Pipe Masters will be remembered for non-stop, high-calibre action from the outset – the individual performances of both Slater and Reynolds drove much of this. The following clip is an awesome compilation of the best waves the pair put together throughout the 09 fixture.
