PRO PORTUGAL 2010 | TRIALS WRAP

SUBERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal - In pumping 4- to 6-foot Supertubes, Portugal resident Marlon Lipke beat out a talented field of competitors, including European legend Pablo Gutierrez and local threat Vasco Ribeiro.

"This all kind of came out of nowhere," Marlon said just after the final. "It's so great to be able to surf against the best surfers in the world again." (Marlon was a member of the WCT Top 45 in 2009).

Dawn broke with classic conditions at the "European Pipeline", as Supertubes is known, and the trialists wasted no time diving deep into the left and right-hand pits on offer throughout the day. But it was a dream A-frame that popped up in Marlon's final against Vasco Ribeiro (2nd), Jayce Robinson (3rd) and Jules Thomet (4th) that allowed him to be swallowed onto the foam ball then spit out to the tune of a 7.83.

"It was getting kind of tricky out there with the high-tide," Marlon continued, "But I was lucky enough to get that 7.8 with 15 minutes left and then hold off the guys from there."

And the surprises kept coming for Marlon when he sat down for the Rip Curl Pro Portugal press conference shortly after his win and was informed that he will be facing Mick Fanning and Dan Ross in Heat 5 of Round 1 when competition commences.

"Shit," Marlon said. "Guess I’ve gotta be on my game now." (Marlon’s fellow Wildcard-holder, Bruno Santos, will face Kelly Slater and Tom Whitaker in Heat 6).
