AIR JORDY | JORDY SMITH'S TAHITIAN JUDO

TEAHUPOO, TAHITI - Jordy Smith took to the skies to advance in his opening heat of the Billabong Pro Tahiti. The current world number one pulled off a dazzling backhand Judo aerial to see off CJ Hobgood and Manoa Drollet in their round one clash.

Teahupoo scores are usually solely derived from tube-time, however Smith bucked this trend by launching and landing this massive one-footed aerial - he was awarded a high seven for the wave that included just two additional turns and zero barrel-time. By successfully treating Teahupoo as a high-performance wave, Smith's effectively changing the way the game is played at this otherwise barrel-only break.

Smith: “Definitely relieved to get through Round 1 out there. We haven’t been doing too much on the off days. So it was tricky out there, but super excited to get through and start focusing on the next heat.”

Enjoy.
