DANE REYNOLDS | THRILLS, SPILLS AND WHAT NOT

YOU ONLY have to look at the ASP’s profiles on its top 45 (soon to be ‘Top 32’) to gather Dane Reynolds exists outside your typical pro-surfer prototype. While the likes of Parko, Fanning and Jordy Smith state, “fishing”, “hanging out with friends” and “tennis” amongst their hobbies, respectively. Reynolds, the 24-year-old Ventura native, simply lists, “drinking more beer”.

Neither a rebel, bad-boy nor alcoholic, Reynolds is someone who chooses to exist outside the mundane, not taking certain aspects of life so seriously. However his general persona possesses the kind of humility and complete lack of ego that allows him to pull off comments like above, which might otherwise be seen as cynical. He achieves his individuality from such unpredictability.

I guess it’s this unpredictable nature that enables Reynolds, a guy with a laid-back approach to competition surfing, to currently rank inside the top ten of the ASP World Tour. He combines this trait with the kind of progressive freesurfing that might mean going too big on a first turn and falling, or pulling off a 10 point ride based on the merits of a single confronting manoeuvre.

Reynolds has a new movie out later this year that promises to be in stark contrast to predecessors such a First Chapter that won him 'Male Performance in a Video' and ‘Video of the Year’ at the 2006 Surfer Poll Awards.

Going well beyond the mundane, Thrills, Spills and What Not appears to celebrate artistic surfing outtakes as much as it does big moves.

In addition to HD, the film is shot on 8mm, 16mm and Bolex cameras, which are used to encase Reynolds’ surfing in a happy-haze of enjoyable grit. It has jumpy erratic editing and a rawness that channels a retro home-movie feel.

Thrills, Spills and What Not is the kind of alternate and art-driven production that might seek to position Reynolds outside the mainstream. However, given the man’s talent and popularity, this is a realm he’ll not easily elude. The result: a film that will see
imagination, oddity and creative production thrust upon the masses. Powerful.
