HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – Kelly Slater and Dane Reynolds both had respectable showings at the The US Open of Surfing Here’s a look at the hovercrafts they both used during the event. 


KELLY #1
The ‘Semi Pro’ [pictured TOP RIGHT]
Dimensions: 5'9? x 18 1/4? x 2 1/4?

• The ‘Semi Pro’ (name originates from Slater/Reynolds inside joke) is a squash tail experimental board Slater’s been working with and refining of late. He spent the US summer months testing the board in Central America and first debuted it at J-bay, but as a roundtail. It’s a cross between his his ‘Proton’ and ‘Tangent’ models.

The ‘Black Flag Whip’ [pictured MIDDLE LEFT]
Dimensions: 5'9? x 18 1/2? x 2 1/4?

• The ‘Black Flag Whip’ is pictured with a half moon tail but now features a triplane hull bottom that provides lift - making the board loose and very fast. The deck is concaved to get his feet close to the water line, while the graphite strips, which run all the way down the bottom of the board stopping at where the fins commence, give the craft a springy feel.

‘The Chopped Tail - Rookie’ [pictured MIDDLE RIGHT & BOTTOM]
Dimensions: 6'1” x 18 5/8? x 2 5/16?

• Reynolds rode a fairly standard shortboard -the ‘Rookie’ model. However his version is unique as it has a “chopped tail”. About an inch or so of the tail was cut off, giving it a very square edge. This gave the board a wider surface area in the tail, allowing Dane to glide over Huntington’s fat sections.
