OUR PICKS FOR INNERSECTION.TV SUMMER ROUND
By THE COLT
Innersection.tv summer round is now down to the top 10, and in a few days the top guys will be decided. The mesurf team thought they'd have a crack at unlocking the code and going out there to make the call on who's got what it takes. This round was one of the best rounds we've seen so far, and choosing a winner wasn't easy. While a winner was chosen, we believe any of our top 5 (John John Florence, Clay Marzo, Pat Gudauskas, Ry Craike & Josh Kerr) could make the final film.
In order to have the best surf
clip possible there were a few key factors that stood out (as mentioned in our last review):
A FEW THINGS WE NOTICED:
• Music is key! We already knew
this, but it seems some budding filmmakers still don't really
understand the power of music in their edits. You'll notice some clips
have more punch than others, simply because they chose a
better tune.
• Editing can be the difference
between a good clip and a section that leaves you wanting more.
• Airs and boosts are great but
without style they're missing the mark. Style is at least as important
as going big.
• The calibre of surfing in these 16
clips is extremely high! We're frothing on what's being showcased.
• The intro to a clip is very
important as it sets the mood and can make or break a good surf clip. Some clips use
them some don't. We think it can add to the overall experience.
SO HOW DID WE RATE THE CLIPS?
• Names were selected out of a hat at random and paired up against one another.
• Each clip (in pairs) was then watched and ranked by 4 mesurf team members.
• The votes were then tallied up and the winner moves through to the next round.
• Due to 5 places occurring in ROUND 2, a randomly selected section from GROUP A, ROUND 1 was placed up against the winner of GROUP B, ROUND 2.
• The rest is self-explanatory really...

ROUND 1
KERR VS GERBER
KERR - This clip shows you why Josh Kerr is seen as one of the best aerialists of our time. His height and technical difficulty is unrivalled and super smooth. Throw in a few barrels, and power carves and you've got yourself a damn sweet clip. This could be a hard one to beat.
GERBER - Gerber's clip is good but it's missing that 'WOW' factor you get from Kerr's clip. Gerber can surf and there are some awesome barrels that go down, but he's up against a tough match and in this case he doesn't have the goods.
THIS ROUND GOES TO KERR...
PERILLO VS FLORENCE
PERILLO - An awesome choice of song and that shows right from the start. A nice intro cut and some smooth surfing throughout. While the slow-mo used is effective at times, we can't help thinking it would have better served on the more technical manoeuvres. The clip is missing some of the larger and more technical surfing we've seen so far, but the heavy slab rides make up for any missing aerials.
FLORENCE - This kid is a freak! The clip is charged from the start and holds pace right throughout. We all frothed on the skate filming and editing that was thrown in as well. The editing of the clip is great and the key standout against Perillo was there's no wasted film. Every shot and sequence was on the money. Amazing big Hawaii charge scenes that are always awesome to watch, and throw the kid in 2ft slop and he kills it! Overall an awesome all round clip with great editing and filming.
THIS ROUND GOES TO FLORENCE.
MARZO VS MORRISON
MARZO - Song choice is off the hook. You throw this clip on and you're pulled into an emotionally charged surfing scene. Marzo throws in a good mix of flair and dedication and hooks into a few heavy sections that are definitely worth watching several times over. The editing was pretty cool and all moved together well, with a couple of clever little fade techniques.
DINGO - One of the best backhand surfers out of the group and it's awesome to watch, but his aerials are sloppy in comparison to the competition. While Dingo's power surfing is hard-hitting and awesome to watch, his overall display is not as tight as the competition. Unfortunately, up against young Marzo, Dingo won't be going through to the next round, but we all loved watching him...
THIS WAS A HARD CHOICE AS BOTH STYLES ARE VERY DIFFERENT BUT THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE THAT MOVES THROUGH!
THIS ROUND GOES TO MARZO
WALSH VS GUDAUSKAS
WALSH - Amazing filming and editing with some of the best cuts out of the top 10 round. Walsh has a knack for finding some of the best barrels, but unfortunately his repertoire of moves is limited and there's no sign of aerials? The kid rips though and is awesome to watch. A clip that's worth 3min of your time but to get through to the top 5 of INNERSECTION you gotta have everything...
GUDAUSKAS - A cool and clever little intro, and we always love seeing Mavs. The clip is very well filmed and edited, plus there are some great fluid angles which set Gudauskas' section apart. The clip overall is missing the 'WOW' factor, but at this stage of the competition it only needs to beat Walsh's entry.
ANOTHER VERY CLOSE ROUND. GIVING THIS TO GUDAUSKAS BASED ON THE MORE VARIED SURFING AND LOCATIONS.
THIS ROUND GOES TO GUDAUSKAS
CRAIKE VS OZZY
CRAIKE - You'll never see backhand snaps happen quicker than this. Craike absolutely kills it on his backhand and this alone is worth watching it for. Craike takes on some awesome WA slabs and the clip is well edited and shot. It's missing some of the flair that I've seen in other clips, but overall is an awesome entry with some fast and smooth surfing.
OZZY - As expected, a very clever and abstract entry, but it's all shot from a similar angle throughout with nothing new showcased. I love watching Ozzy surf, his timeless style and cool demeanor make him one of the more interesting crew floating about. I felt the clip however doesn't suit the 'INNERSECTION.TV' scope and is in a different league to the rest of the field. A clip that is well worth watching and I think will be popping up on a lot of other channels down the track.
THIS ROUND GOES TO CRAIKE

ROUND 2
KERR VS FLORENCE VS MARZO
Due to the three way action on this section, it was agreed to choose one of the clips at random and put them up against the winner from GROUP B round 2 (see below graph). Confusing? Maybe. Fun? Probably. Did it work? Yes!
FLORENCE was the lucky winner of a free pass to go up against the winner between GUDAUSKAS and CRAIKE.
As for KERR VS MARZO, this was the hardest of the group. These two were definite
stand-outs. With 2 votes each from the judging panel, plus over an hour and a half back-and-forth on the clips, arguments were rising. Both clips had their merits and both had a few little things that could have been improved. These two clips could have been the final 2, but due to the 'luck' factor in the draw (Kerr getting a run through) someone had to go. After another 45min of viewing and fighting the votes changed, 3 to 1 in favour of Kerr for his amazing aerials that were a cut above the rest.
KERR GOES THROUGH TO FINAL
GUDAUSKAS VS CRAIKE
Another tough call, and one that took time and raised the blood pressure of a few judges. We watched both these clips back-and-forth at least 5 times each before coming to a final decision. Both clips have their pro's and con's but after a long stint we had to make a call, and the call was Gudauskas.
As outlined in Round 1, Gudauskas has great editing and filming techniques along with a number of locations, offering good variety. While Craike went down in this round we think he's definitely a contender to make the cut for Taylor Steele's feature film.
GUDAUSKAS GOES INTO ELIMINATION ROUND WITH FLORENCE

ELIMINATION ROUND
GUDAUSKAS VS FLORENCE
Two hot young surfers with amazing clips went head-to-head to make it through to the final against Josh Kerr. Who had the goods? Well, as we pointed out in earlier rounds, both these clips were awesome, but it was Florence who stood out with his all round surfing ability and well edited piece. While Gudauskas had a killer clip, the surfing wasn't on par with Florence for this round.

FINAL
FLORENCE VS KERR
Even though we all thought we'd seen these clips enough to make a call we watched and watched again. We took this thing pretty damn serious and the votes were rolling through with a 2 vs 2 vote that helped no one. The day was late, the beer came out and everyone hit a second wind. Discussions were flowing and everyone had a very strong reason as to why their chosen clip should win.
So after much debate, 5 beers each, security coming into the conference room late to check why people were still in the building and 5 pizza's later, a decision was made. The votes were pulled out of a jar revealing mesurf's number 1 pick for INNERSECTION.TV summer round.
